Mass spectrometry is one of the most sensitive detectors and is typically coupled with other separation chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This orthogonal mass spectrometry has played a large role in drug development, in support of both qualitative and quantitative analysis, due to its superior speed, sensitivity, and selectivity. 

High-resolution accurate mass spec has the power to achieve accurate molecular weight determination, oligonucleotide (peptide) mapping, impurity characterization, confident identification of modification of oligonucleotides (peptides), and their quantitation.
